From his dyed black hair to his make-up adorned face, Elvis himself was a work of art.
Since he first got famous, people turned him into an art-worthy icon.
For some it was a joke – the black velvet Elvis.
For others, Elvis Presley was serious subject matter.
Andy Warhol did a series of silver paintings in his FLAMING STAR pose. Warhol gave one to Bob Dylan, who reportedly traded it for a couch. So much for Dylan's appreciation of Elvis art....
A woman named Betty Harper has done terrific drawings of Elvis, and has had books published of her work.
Strangely, Georgia seems to be the current hot-bed of Elvis art, as it is the home state of both the late Howard Finster who painted the above Elvis in the army portrait, and the amazing Joni Mabe.
And of course there have always been officially commissioned artistic interpretations of Elvis -- done for the records and the movies. Visit the Girl's Guide to Elvis's movie poster page. It features Elvis in prime 50's sketch look, and then in swinging 60's glamour drawings. And of course he's always accompanied by girls.
